SpaceX CRS-1: More on first stage engine loss

October 8 2012 04:33:44 AM | by Clark Lindsey, Managing Editor

Gwynne Shotwell mentioned in the news conference that there was an "anomaly" with one of the Merlin 1C engines during the boost phase of the first stage. As show in this video, it looks like the engine disintegrated. As planned in the design of the Falcon 9, the redundancy in the number of engines and their capabiliies allowed the mission to be completed despite the loss of the engine.

It's also good to point out that there the upgraded Merlin 1D engines will be used after the next flight.

Update: Elon Musk sent a comment to NASA Watch about losing the engine and about the response of the rocket. Rand Simberg discusses the engine loss here: The SpaceX Launch Anomaly - Transterrestrial Musings.
