Just curious, what's with the pointy nose? A measurement probe? Or just to look "space-sexy," a'la Flash Gordon?

And if a probe, why is something that fragile-looking for a transportation event like this one, worthy of still remaining attached to the vehicle, while the beefer wings had to go (acknowledging the very obvious reason why the wings were removed)
